Sharon Marguerite Gless was born on 31 May, 1943, in Los Angeles, California USA, to Marjorie and Dennis J. Gless. She is an actress, best known for known for her roles in the television series “Switch”, “Cagney & Lacey”, “The Trials of Rosie O’Neil”, “Queer as Folk” and “Burn Notice”.
So just how rich is Sharon Gless? According to sources, Gless has acquired a wealth over $10 million, as of early 2017. Her assets include homes in Los Angeles, Miami and Toronto. The main source of her net worth has been her acting career which began in the mid-1970s.
Gless’ grandfather was Neil S. McCarthy, a Los Angeles attorney who was considered as the most renowned and powerful entertainment lawyer of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Prior to her acting career, Gless worked as a secretary for advertising agencies and film production companies. In the mid-’70s she took acting classes and signed a 10-year contract with Universal Studios, being the last contract player in the history of Hollywood.
During the ’70s, she appeared in numerous television series and films, and in several movies as well. These included series such as “Marcus Welby, M.D.” and “Faraday and Company”, and films like “Bonnie’s Kids” and “The Islander”. In 1975 she was cast as the young secretary Maggie Philbin in the CBS series “Switch”; the role, which she played for three seasons until the show’s end in 1978, paved her way to recognition, greatly adding to her net worth. By the end of the decade, she had landed a number of television guest appearances, as well as recurring roles in the series “Centennial” and “Turnabout”.
The early ’80s brought Gless many parts in TV films, and the leading role of Emily Hardin in the crime drama film “The Star Chamber”. In 1982 she was cast in the CBS TV series “Cagney & Lacey”, in the joint-leading role of NYPD police detective Christine Cagney, and remained in the show during its seven-season run until 1988. Her performance enabled her to gain great popularity, finding herself in the hearts and minds of many fans. It also brought her a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award, plus significantly improving her wealth.
Gless’ next played the major title role in the CBS drama series “The Trials of Rosie O’Neill” in 1990 until 1992, earning her second Golden Globe win, reinforcing her status in the world of acting and increasing her net worth once again. By the end of the decade the actress starred in several “Cagney and Lacey” television films, and received high praise for her performances in the TV films “Honor Thy Mother” and “Separated by Murder”.
In 2000 she was cast as Debbie Novotny in the acclaimed Showtime cable series “Queer as Folk”, remaining in the show for its five seasons until 2005, receiving critical acclaim for her performance of a loving parent of a gay child, and intensifying her wealth. Gless then had a recurring role in the series “The State Within” in 2006, earning raves for her portrayal of US Secretary of Defense Lynne Warner. The following year she landed the lead role of Madeline Westen in the USA Network cable TV series “Burn Notice”, until 2013. Meanwhile, she had the recurring role of ambitious Hollywood agent Colleen Rose in the drama series “Nip/Tuck”, and played the title role of an older lesbian in the film “Hannah Free”. All added to her fortune.
Gless’ most recent television involvement was a recurring role in the horror drama series “The Exorcist” in 2016.
Aside from film and television, Gless has also established herself as a renowned stage actress, having appeared in numerous stage projects, among them two West End appearances, the first in the stage production of Stephen King’s “Misery” and secondly in Neil Simon’s “Chapter Two”. She also starred in Claudia Allen’s “Cahoots” and Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues”, and has done many radio plays too.
In her personal life, Gless has been married to producer Barney Rosenzweig, who produced “Cagney and Lacey” as well as “The Trials of Rosie O’Neil”, since 1991. The actress is a stepmother to Rosenzweig’s three daughters.
